Pocket Squares – Not Just for Men

Have you seen the fall catalogue for Madewell? I love love love everything! It’s full of vivid autumn colors, stripes and dots, well-crafted leather bags, and the list goes on… But one particular style trick that caught my eye was the pocket square. Gals, it’s not just for men, nor is it only for a suit. Show a bit of personality with your blazer. Solange Knowles, Madewell’s brand ambassador du jour, is rocking her pocket square while mixing dots below. Twice the dots, twice the fun!

If you’re looking to play with the menswear trend, a pocket square is the perfect toy. You can mix it up with intricate folds like the three point fold, the straight fold, and the three stairs fold. Check out simple to follow illustrations HERE. You should note that only select women’s blazers feature a breast pocket. So make sure you check your jacket before you shop for a complementary pocket square.

Size also matters. Adjust your folds according to the size of your pocket square and the width of the jacket pocket. Pocket squares usually measure between 10 to 18 inches. For a custom fit, making your own pocket square is as easy as choosing a fabric, cutting the cloth, and stitching it together. For a DIY pocket square tutorial, check out eHow HERE.

Because men’s pocket squares are often colorful and graphic (to complement their ties), there are many options women will enjoy too. If you’re looking to purchase a pocket square, here are some selections from both women’s and men’s shopping sites.
