I bought this desk a few years ago during the Parsons desk craze. While not a Parsons desk, it came quite close and was much more budget friendly. But it lacked the lacquer finish needed to achieve a glam look. I added a coat of lacquer paint and within a short period of time, the desk began to attract stains like magazine ink and coffee rings. Paint even rubbed off on the edges. When Ace Hardware contacted me about partnering together for its “31 Days of Color” campaign, I knew this was the perfect chance to give my desk a facelift.
I visited Ace Hardware’s online Paint Studio (http://www.thepaintstudio.com) to get color inspiration for my project. In fact, every day in March Ace Hardware is uncovering the Color of the Day and a chance to win a $10,000 paint makeover or daily gift cards.
My desk is located in my bedroom, which has a palette of navy, yellow and grey. I knew I wanted to add color to the desk, and yellow always makes me happy. So I opted for Asian Tea by Clark + Kensington, today’s Color of the Day. This particular yellow has golden undertones, which make it extra chic.
For this project, I decided to give the desk a midcentury modern makeover by adding hairpin legs, available here (similar). By painting them in Asian Tea, I thought it would give the desk the colorful twist I sought. I also had an idea brewing on how to liven up the desk with a secret pop of color.
I visited my local Ace Hardware in St. Louis with a general idea in mind. But I needed some extra guidance. The very first person I talked to was able to help me with the exact products I needed. In fact, he had just completed a similar project for his daughter, so he knew the tools to buy and tips to follow. His friendliness and enthusiasm for my project boosted my confidence. After getting my paint mixed, I was ready to go.
Once I set down my drop cloth and removed the original legs from my desk, I set to work on removing the layer of lacquer paint I had applied years ago. To do this, I needed the following products:
First I donned chemical-resistant gloves, critical for handling paint stripper. I used a brush to quickly apply the stripper all over the surface of the desk. After 15 minutes, I scraped the paint off the surface with the putty knife. To fully remove the paint, I did this process twice. Make sure you remove as much as possible to ensure a smooth surface. Use the stripping pad to scrub off any excess paint. It will come off in wet clumps. This process cleared the desk of all those pesky stains and such from before. Let the surface dry for two hours before applying any paint.
In the meantime, I used a brush to paint the new hairpin legs in Asian Tea with two coats. Allow at least two hours before painting a new coat. After I painted the legs, I returned to the desk and painted it with two coats of Clark + Kensington Paint + Primer in One Semi-Gloss Enamel, which I thought provided plenty of coverage.
For the fun part of the project, I decided to paint stripes inside the drawers. That way whenever I open the drawers, there would be a fun surprise to brighten my day. I laid down painter’s tape vertically across each drawer to prevent bleeding and ensure straight lines.
Finally, I drilled holes under the corners of the desk and screwed in the hairpin legs. Make sure you use plenty of elbow grease. It’s definitely a good arm workout!
Here is the before and after:

I’m excited to enjoy my new desk. With the wheels, I can move it around too! I love the way the Asian Tea legs complement the chevron rug. What do you think?

Traveling to far off places can be exciting in part because of the unique treasures found in a global shopper’s paradise. From souks to bazaars to underground marketplaces, the possibilities are endless. But shipping heavy furniture and decor back home can be a nightmare. Wanderloot solves this problem by enabling U.S. customers to shop quality, sustainable and affordable global home goods from the comfort of their home. Started in 2010 by Julie Grant Weiss and her husband David, Wanderloot is an online marketplace that sells modern and vintage furniture from India, Vietnam, Ethiopia, China and Indonesia.
For furniture, choose from reclaimed/recycled wood pieces, handmade Rajasthani furniture and luxurious feather-down upholstery. Each piece of furniture is limited edition and made to last for generations. Also shop distinctive decor accessories like pillows, mirrors and textiles discovered along Wanderloot’s travels.
Wanderloot reinvents old railroad timbers, boats, furniture, houses, doors and windows to create their reclaimed furniture. Skilled craftsmen apply traditional northwestern Indian techniques to transform reclaimed pieces by hand. In this process, Wanderloot aims to protect the world’s forests by using Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified wood. These include sheesham, mango and acacia woods that are fair trade and sustainable. You will find that each piece is distinct ensuring that your purchase is one-of-a-kind.
To top it all off, a portion of proceeds from every Wanderloot sale of Indian-made furniture goes to the Shadhika Foundation. This contribution provides Indian girls education, empowerment, and economic self-sufficiency for a brighter future.

There is infinite beauty in the simplicity of traditions and techniques used in Indian crafts of yesteryear. Imagine living in a space with modest Indian homewares designed with a touch of modernity. No-Mad 97% India brings this concept to light by creating an environment to “nest” in away from the stresses of daily life. Inspired 97% by India, No-Mad’s other 3% flows in from beyond the borders of the subcontinent.
How Did the Concept Evolve?
Anuj Kothari, an engineer by trade, had more creative plans for his life. He partnered up with seasoned Art Director and Belgian designer Valerie Barkowski. Together they determined a unique vision for a new made-in-India concept store. While Kothari had no prior experience in the design industry, his passion fueled him through the hoops of start-up life. With Barkowski’s creative experience, No-Mad launched in 2013 and quickly became a leading cutting edge lifestyle brand in India.
Barkowski was the perfect choice for Kothari to co-create with. Although it seemed odd to develop an Indian brand with a Belgian, Barkowski was known for her curiosity of other cultures. An avid traveler from a young age, she visited India for the first time at 20. Amidst her vast multicultural resumé, she was credited with developing a line of home linens for Bandit Queen, another Indian brand. Barkowski’s eye for simple, refined and traditional design was another feather in her cap. She had a knack for taking common or neglected objects and making them shine in a new light. And that was the concept she helped build No-Mad on. Indian culture had inspired the world for centuries. She wanted to upend that process to make Indian products with inspiration drawn elsewhere.
What Makes No-Mad Unique?
While the concept of East/West style has become highly popular, what stands out about No-Mad is its dedication to refinement, authenticity and timelessness. The duo define No-Mad 97% India as a “slow” lifestyle brand, or one that enables you to disengage and simplify your life.
Travel is the foundation of No-Mad’s aesthetic. Each collection starts with ancient Indian traditions, which are then modernized for present sensibilities, but design inspiration comes by looking outside of India. The very first collection was infused with Moroccan and African patterns and prints.
Each collection has a curated color scheme, the first being red and white followed by green and white, purple and white and black and white. This refined, yet energetic color palette makes it easier for consumers to mix and match future purchases with previous ones, making the collection truly timeless.
Where can we shop?
