Do you ever wonder how celebrities nail their hat style? Why is it that Rosie Huntington-Whiteley always looks spectacular in the perfect fedora at the airport or Blake Lively scores effortless street style in her floppy hat? They can thank high fashion milliner Eugenia Kim. Last weekend I attended her trunk show at Neiman Marcus St. Louis hosted by Kim’s Director of Sales, Marjorie Handelman. If you’re looking to invest in a beautiful topper, read on to discover Marjorie’s tips on how to choose the right hat for your face, proper hat etiquette and how to easily steal the hat style of celebrities you adore.
First thing’s first. Why invest in a hat?
Well if you’re anything like me, you have tons of flat hair days. When you are not feeling the way your hair looks in the morning, a hat can really pump you up. There are plenty of movie montages where the characters are having fun trying out all sorts of hats. It is that fun. You tend to take on a new, cooler persona when you have the right hat on. And when it’s as fabulous as a Eugenia Kim hat, it becomes worth the investment. But if you are looking for a more affordable option, she also has a diffusion line called “Genie” (clever nickname right?) with hats under $100. I picked up the Florence in camel at the trunk show and I cannot wait to make it a wardrobe staple.
What types of hats should every woman have in their closet?
A great felt hat is a must. Depending on your shape, choose from two types of crowns — fedora or rounded.
Different styles work on different face shapes. How should one go about choosing the right hat for her face?
Brim size is key. The hat should never wear the person. Make sure you choose the right brim size for your face size and shape. Keep in mind a small brim is more casual, while a large brim is for making a fabulous entrance. Get details on how to find your perfect hat here.
What are the most popular must-have hats from this collection and how can we score celebrity style?
The Bianca, the Blake, the Mimi, and the Farrah are among our best sellers. As far as celebrities, Ellen Page was featured on the cover of W Magazine, October 2014 in the Honey (in black). Blake Lively and Beyonce are also fans. Miranda Kerr wore the Caterina (in black) in Harper’s Bazaar China, August 2014, among other celeb covers.
What are some tips on hat etiquette and care?
These hats are handmade in New York City. The hats are composed of classic felts in sophisticated textures that are hand blocked by artisans in our showroom. A few tips to care properly for your hat include:
- Hang it on a rack if possible.
- Do not handle it by the crown, but hold the brim.
- Do not lie it flat on a surface. Over time this will warp the brim. Hang the hat off the edge of a table or rest it on its crown.
- Steam the felt to restore its shape.
- If it is too big, you may shrink the hat by steaming the grosgrain inside the crown.
Eugenia Kim was originally pre-med at Dartmouth. But after graduating, she shifted course and studied at the Parsons School of Design. For those out there considering a creative profession, has she ever looked back and thought, “I should have become a doctor? It’s a more stable profession.”
No, her advice is to always follow your heart. Nobody makes hats the way she does. She has a good team behind her and is passionate about her work. And she hasn’t looked back.
