One of the things I love about winter style is all the tartan plaid. I’m a sucker for a good print, especially an embellished one. This beaded top featuring winter plaid is on sale right now at J.Crew for 80% off and is now under $18. Plus there are several sizes left.
One of the things I look forward to most in the winter is all the cute and cozy style. Winter coats in bright shades and adorable prints, fuzzy sweaters, scarves for an extra dash of color, luxe boots, and of course over the top hats. No one but snowmen look forward to the cold weather. But if you can layer in style, it kind of makes it all worthwhile. Lately I’ve been opting for more color with the dreariness of the season. A cheery yellow winter coat and a rainbow scarf are my go-to items before I leave the house. So no matter what the weather’s like, I always bring a little sunshine with me wherever I go.
***Tip: Taking pictures in the cold without gloves only works works when you’ve got a hot beverage in your hand. Otherwise, you may as well wrap your hands with a bow and gift them to frostbite.
I think there’s magic in the color yellow. It always puts an extra pep in my step when I wear it, which helps on dreary days. Actually, I’ve got a bad case of the blues during the winter time. I’m thinking about purchasing one of these light therapy lamps to get me through the winter. Have you tried one? What do you think and which one would you recommend?
Another way I like to brighten my day is to pick up some fresh flowers. In a small space, they really liven up a room. During the holidays, some people like to buy an entire tree and put it in their home. Crazy, right?! 🙂 In all seriousness, I don’t celebrate Christmas. Although I do love the experience of going to the tree lot, browsing the lush green firs, enjoying some cider, and watching excited friends choose their tree. Oh, and finding the perfect photo ops for my Holiday card. What do you think of the one below?
Aside from peeking out between Christmas trees, I’ll be spending the holidays watching cheesy Christmas romance movies on Netflix (agreed with Twitter: A Christmas Prince is so awful it’s good), eating lots of cookies and pies, and scouring the online sales this season. That’s pretty much the trifecta of joy for me before the new year.
What are you doing to brighten up the dull days of winter?
We’re in the home stretch of the holiday season. Now that it’s late December, the weather has gone from a bit nippy to straight up chilly. Bundling up is a necessity here in the midwest and sometimes I’m simply not in the mood to throw on my puffer coat. It’s the lazy woman’s choice for warmth. For more polished warmth, I styled this J.Jill outerwear look including the Cambridge Coat (on sale for $91*) and Ultrasoft Chenille Tunic (on sale for $28*), plus a couple of uber cute accessories for that extra feminine touch.
When I read how amazingly soft this sweater is, I wanted to try it for myself. It definitely lives up to its promise. I couldn’t pass up the trapper hat either. So many adorable J.Jill outerwear pieces! My biggest pet peeve after cold hands are cold red ears in the wintertime. And this hat creates the warmest barrier against the elements. Plus it’s just as soft as the sweater.
How I Get the Perfect Fit Every Time
With J.Jill, I know their clothes will fit me perfectly every time. After wearing so many of their pieces, I don’t even have to try them on to know they’ll fit, even for length. The Cambridge Coat hits my thigh at just the right place. It also cinches a bit at the waist to give my figure definition, unlike my overused puffer coat. J.Jill has an array of sizes from Misses, Petites, Plus Size, and Tall. Virtually every body type is covered.
Finally, J.Jill encourages shoppers to help give back with the Compassion Fund. With any J.Jill Compassion Fund items you purchase, including the limited-edition floral printed scarf I’m wearing, 100% of the proceeds will be donated to support community-based organizations that help disadvantaged and homeless women become self-sufficient. That sounds like a great way to harness the holiday spirit this season!

Is it burning up where you are, or are you still experiencing the occasional cold snap? It’s the latter in St. Louis, which gives me a chance to try out Heat Holders thermal socks. This particular pair is the Ladies LITE socks in purple. I must say that my feet feel like they’re cocooned in warm cozy clouds. These are short enough to be concealed in knee length boots, but I pulled my socks a bit over the top so that you could see the fit and color. Plus, if you’ve got new denim, these socks can create a good barrier between your boots so that the color doesn’t bleed onto them. Let’s just say I’ve learned my lesson as my boots are faded blue on the inside.
The LITE pair comes in a slew of neutrals and brights including, black, charcoal, purple, indigo and fuchsia and retails for only $13. Their Wellington boot socks retail for $20. This is a great deal as compared to Hunter brand boot socks which retail for around $55. I also adore Heat Holders slipper socks, perfect for lounging around the house or in bed.
One of my favorite things about the winter, aside from the snow (in normal amounts), is all the cozy winter style from sweaters to coats to of course hats, scarves and gloves. There are some adorable items out there to keep your winter game on point. One of my favorite winter accessories this season is the pompom hat. It takes your look from cozy to cute. Here are some lovely pieces in a variety of hues that will integrate perfectly into your winter wardrobe.
All of these accessories are under $200 with most under $70. You can get a different look with just about every hat. I think my favorite is that Urban Outfitters hat – such a great color combo! Which one is your favorite?
When you go shopping and don’t need anything, it’s always easier to find items you love. That’s exactly what happened with this dress. I stopped by the Topshop sale rack on a whim and found this Victorian style dress for only $24. I knew it would come in handy for one of those times I look in my closet and convince myself I have nothing to wear.
What I’m even more excited about is finding these suede booties on sale for 40% off from Coach. With a 2.5 in heel, I can walk around in these for hours without complaining. And the studded details add just the right amount of edginess. It’s so hard to find a pair of black booties that are a) comfortable, b) affordable and c) stylish to suit your tastes. When I saw these I knew I had found the one!
On a side note, while I adore this dress and the Victorian trend that has been dominating the runways, I couldn’t help but think it reminded me a little of Jennifer Lawrence’s Oscar dress (you know the tampon one) haha.

It’s no surprise that I adore the black and white check print. When I saw this windowpane coat online at Anthropologie, I knew it was perfect for me. The exterior of the coat is made from a mix of wool and mohair, which gives it a luxurious softness, while the lining has an unexpected rich gold tone. I paired the windowpane coat with a black and white look and touches of gold. Don’t feel boxed in by your style options with this coat. You could easily dress it up with a hot pink shift or down with jeans and a floral blouse. Leopard would also go great with it! The choices are endless. Think of the coat’s print as a neutral.
I read the reviews for this coat and a few of the comments stood out for me. The cut of the coat may look large on a smaller frame and the shoulders may appear boxy. Others thought the button placement was too low, making the wearer appear larger when buttoned. Consider choosing a petite size if you are worried about any of these fit issues.
What do you think of the windowpane print? For me, it’s just as beloved as my other favorite — buffalo plaid. Shop the look (or similar styles) in the blog shop!
After the holidays, things can feel well…a bit underwhelming. That first Monday after New Year’s means it’s back to the real world. January and February usually signal more frigid temperatures. With all that holiday indulgence, many start hitting it hard at the gym and improving their diets. And finally, after a few days of gathering together, families and friends return to communicating via WhatsApp, Skype or FaceTime. It all makes me want to hide away for just a bit longer.
The closest alternative to throwing the covers back over my head without truancy is putting on a cozy sweater. A bright red pullover is my secret weapon for fighting winter weather woes. Perhaps it will shock me into a happier mood or even trick mother nature into parting the clouds to let the sun shine brighter. Whatever it is, one thing is clear: it’s sweater weather, a fashion season I look forward to. Hats, gloves, boots and layers upon layers — all essential tools of the trade for a warm weather look.
I picked up this striking Crimson Red Mixed Cable-Knit Pullover from Banana Republic on sale (there’s usually an additional discount code for sale items). By the way, it may look like I have love handles underneath my sweater, but that’s just the way the sweater falls. I think after a few wears, it will flatten out. I layered the sweater with my favorite polka dot chambray and added a crystal necklace for sparkle. A mix of brown hued accessories grounded the look including my favorite felt hat Florence by Eugenia Kim. Finally nothing says FU to the post-holiday doldrums like a smile.
Brrr…it’s cold out there. I’m fighting between the desire to stay stylish, and the need to feel my fingertips. If you are looking for inspiration on how to maintain a bit of femininity and stay warm when out with your man, this look’s for you.
Since wearing more animal print is one of my resolutions, why not start off the first outfit inspiration of the year with a leopard print coat? This one is only $39 so if you’re not married to the print, you don’t have to wear it all of the time. But if you love it, why not? Since I can’t resist a bit of fluff, I had to throw in a pair of cute earmuffs. This shearling set is made from lambs groomed in Italy so they are sure to keep your ears chic and toasty. And your date will find you extra adorable wearing them.
Those Topshop drops are the perfect mix of sweet and edgy and I like that the loafers have just a hint of gold. I also love this clutch inspired by the beaches of Goa, its nightlife, and exuberant colors. Its velvet texture is perfect for the wintertime, while its saffron yellow hue is a nod to sunnier climates. And don’t forget a pair of sleek leather gloves (these are on sale for 60% off) – a must have item for your winter wardrobe.
